Hi! I first discovered The Supremes in 1964 when I was listening to my transistor radio in Maryland and I heard Where Did Our Love Go? for the first time. From that moment I was a fan for life. That's why I've started this blog. And I welcome you and thank you for coming by!

Mary Wilson's 72nd Birthday, 3/6/16

Happy Birthday Mary Wilson ,
(born March 6, 1944). Wilson is best known as a founding member of the popular sixties Motown group The Supremes. Wilson remained as member of the group following the departures of group mates, Diana Ross and Florence Ballard until the group disbanded in 1977. Wilson was inducted along with Ross and Ballard (as members of the Supremes) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. The Primettes signed to Motown Records in 1961, changing their name to The Supremes,iIn 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy changed the name of the group to Diana Ross & The Supremes. Wilson contributed lead or co-lead vocals to several Supremes songs including the hits "Floy Joy" and "Automatically Sunshine" and the title track of the 1971 album Touch. Wilson got involved in a protracted legal battle with Motown over management of the Supremes. After an out-of-court settlement, Wilson signed with Motown for solo work, releasing a disco-heavy self-titled album in 1979. A single, from the album, "Red Hot" has a modest showing of #90 on the pop charts. Midway through production of a second solo album in 1980, Motown dropped her from their roster. Wilson released two singles on iTunes called "Life's Been Good To Me" and "Darling Mother (Johnnie Mae)" in 2011 and 2013 respectively. In 2015, Wilson released a new single called "Time To Move On" produced by Sweet Feet Music and the song reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Dance charts peaking at #17 as of December 26th.

My Mistake (Was To Love You) Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye

"My Mistake (Was to Love You)" was the one of the original songs featured on the, Diana & Marvin album. "My Mistake (Was to Love You)" was written by Gloria Jones and Pam Sawyer, the team responsible for the Gladys Knight & the Pips' classic "If I Were Your Woman". Pam Sawyer was also the co-writer (with Michael Masser) of the Diana Ross hit, "Last Time I Saw Him" which dropped out of the US Top 40 just prior to the US Top 40 debut of "My Mistake (Was to Love You)" in March 1974: Sawyer would subsequently co-wrote (with Marilyn Mcleod) Diana Ross' 1976 #1 hit "Love Hangover". The song peaked at #15 on the Billboard R&B/Soul singles chart and #19 on the Billboard Pop singles chart.

Bad Weather, The Supremes

"Bad Weather" was a song recorded and released as a single by Motown vocal group The Supremes in 1973. It was composed and produced by Stevie Wonder. The song was then-lead singer Jean Terrell's last charted single as a member of the Supremes and the second and last time brief group member Lynda Laurence was featured on a Supremes single. When the song was first issued to radio in the summer of 1973, the song caught some initial positive buzz mainly from the Supremes' R&B fan ...base. The group performed it to a receptive audience on Soul Train. But the buzz wore down as, according to Mary Wilson years later, it wasn't a favorite of Terrell's or Laurence's. The song charted on the Billboard charts peaking at number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 74 on the R&B singles chart. The song only peaked at the Top 40 of the UK singles chart at number 37. Shortly after this single was released, Terrell and Laurence left the Supremes. Cindy Birdsong returned from her maternity leave, and Mary Wilson hired Scherrie Payne as the new co-lead singer. The next Supremes project would take two more years to come out. In 1975, the group released the disco single "He's My Man" with Wilson and Payne on lead. The third Stevie Wonder connection posted today sung by others.

Stop! In The Name Of Love, 1965

Nothing Could ‘Stop!’ The Supremes

Nothing Could ‘Stop!’ The Supremes

With three American No. 1s in a row, ‘Where Did Our Love Go,’ ‘Baby Love’ and ‘Come See About Me,’ achieved inside four months in 1964, Diana, Florence and Mary really were reigning supreme. On 20 February, 1965, Motown queens the Supremes continued their incredible run, as ‘Stop! In The Name Of Love’ entered the Hot 100. Within five weeks, it was their next chart-topper.
‘Come See About Me’ dropped out of the chart that same week, after a 14-week run, but by now Motown knew exactly when to unveil a follow-up single at just the right moment to keep the hits continuous. ‘Stop! debuted at No. 80, as Gary Lewis and the Playboys moved to No. 1 with ‘This Diamond Ring.’ Motown was already represented in the top ten by the Temptations’ ‘My Girl,’ which climbed 5-4.

A week later, the Supremes single was at No. 41, then soared to No. 13, then 3, 2 and then No. 1 at the end of March. It became their second gold-certified 45, after ‘Baby Love,’ later entering the Grammy and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Among all of the group’s spectacular chart achievements, including their famous run of 12 US No. 1s in a space of five years and four months, one from that 1964-65 season is reported less often. Thanks to Motown’s brilliant production process, not only choosing the right singles but unleashing each one at the right time, the Supremes spent exactly one year on the Hot 100 without a break.
From the point that ‘Where Did Our Love Go’ started its run in the week of 11 July, 1964, they were on the chart every single week, across five singles, all of them No. 1s, until ‘Back In My Arms Again’ finished its run on 10 July, 1965.

The Supremes' Final Performance-January 14, 1970--The Frontier Hotel, Las Vegas, NV

It is hard to believe that it was 46 years ago tonight that Diana Ross, Mary Wilson & Cindy Birdsong (dear Flo was out of the picture for three years at this point) had their last performance together at The Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada--January 14, 1970. It was a star-studded evening & I will never forget it. I had tears in my eyes & chill bumps on my body most of that night. When the telegram from Ed Sullivan was read that read: Tonight one of the most successful acts of the sixties become two of the most successful acts of the seventies; The Supremes & Diana Ross, my heart stopped as I knew it was the end of an era, as millions knew it, but I had such hope that Mary Wilson's Supremes would continue successfully with Jean Terrell & Cindy. It had always been Mary that was the glue that kept The Supremes together. Could Mary continue to do thus & the answer, at least for a while, was yes. The Supremes first release, "Up The Ladder To The Roof" was a wonderful hit for them & they charted before Diana's first release, "Reach Out & Touch Somebody's Hand" which didn't fare as well as The Supremes' even though it has been Ross' signature song ever since. The Supremes' 2nd release, Everybody's Got The Right To Love, didn't do as well and Ross' 2nd was the huge Ain't No Mountain High Enough. Needless to say, Diana was off to an incredible chart topping career yet again. The Supremes had many memorable hits such as the wonderful, Stoned Love, Nathan Jones, Floy Joy, Automatically Sunshine, Your Wonderful Sweet Sweet Love, Bad Weather, & You're My Driving Wheel & I Guess I'll Miss The Man BUT never another #1. Mary held constant through all of the personnel changes but disbanded The Supremes in 1977--& I cried once again. Kudos to Mary once again as she had her first Top 20 Hit in over 40 years with her current Dance Hit, Time To Move On.
